Arnica montana is a perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family and has been used for centuries in European herbal medicine, particularly in topical preparations intended for bruising, soft tissue discomfort and musculoskeletal recovery.
Its principal phytochemical constituents include sesquiterpene lactones (primarily helenalin and its derivatives), flavonoids, phenolic acids and essential oil components.
Experimental studies have demonstrated that helenalin can modulate several inflammatory signalling pathways, including inhibition of NF-κB activation, resulting in reduced production of selected pro-inflammatory mediators. Additional in vitro studies have reported antioxidant activity and modulation of leukocyte migration.
Clinical evidence is strongest for topical Arnica preparations, particularly in postoperative bruising, soft tissue injury and osteoarthritis. Systematic reviews suggest that topical Arnica montana may provide modest benefits in selected musculoskeletal conditions, although study quality, extract standardisation and formulation differences contribute to considerable heterogeneity. Overall, evidence is encouraging but not uniformly conclusive.
Topical Arnica is generally well tolerated when used on intact skin. However, allergic contact dermatitis may occur, particularly in individuals sensitised to plants of the Asteraceae family.
