SIRIAM Platform role

Within the SIRIAM Platform, Boswellia serrata Extract is regarded as one of the principal botanical components of the Release Core.

Unlike the Structural & Dermal Support Core ingredients, which establish the common pharmaceutical architecture, Boswellia serrata contributes to the functional identity of the Release phase by introducing a botanical component with a well-described biological rationale.

Within the SIRIAM formulation philosophy, Boswellia is not intended to define regional anatomical identity. Instead, it represents a common Release Core ingredient that may be incorporated across multiple formulations, while Regional Signature Components provide anatomical differentiation.

Its inclusion reflects the platform concept of combining a standardized pharmaceutical foundation with carefully selected botanical compounds whose mechanisms are biologically plausible within topical formulations.

Scientific rationale

Boswellia serrata is a medicinal tree native to India, the Middle East and parts of North Africa. Its resin contains numerous pentacyclic triterpenes collectively known as boswellic acids, including 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA), one of the most extensively studied constituents.

Experimental research has demonstrated that boswellic acids influence several inflammatory signalling pathways. Among the best characterised mechanisms is inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), resulting in reduced leukotriene synthesis. Additional experimental studies suggest modulation of NF-κB signalling, matrix metalloproteinases, cytokine production and oxidative stress pathways.

Human clinical studies have primarily investigated oral Boswellia extracts, particularly in osteoarthritis, chronic inflammatory disorders and selected musculoskeletal conditions. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest modest improvements in pain and physical function, although variability exists between preparations, extraction methods and study quality.

Scientific evidence supporting topical Boswellia remains considerably more limited. Preliminary investigations suggest local biological activity and favourable skin tolerability, but high-quality clinical trials remain scarce.

Current scientific evidence evaluates Boswellia serrata primarily as an isolated botanical extract or within conventional pharmaceutical preparations. No published studies currently evaluate its incorporation into a region-specific neurodermal formulation system such as the SIRIAM Platform. Consequently, its inclusion reflects both established biological plausibility and the architectural design philosophy of the platform rather than evidence for this specific neurodermal application.
