Neurocutaneous anatomy

The interface where peripheral nerve architecture meets the skin, and how SIRIAM defines its zones.

The skin as an interface

The skin is the largest interface of the body and the most densely innervated organ by surface area. Free nerve endings, encapsulated receptors and autonomic fibres all terminate within a few millimetres of the surface.

Defining a zone

A SIRIAM neurocutaneous zone is a named surface field defined by palpable landmarks and referenced to segmental and peripheral maps. It is deliberately larger than any single dermatome, because overlap makes narrow fields unreliable.

Transitions

Zones are most distinctive where two systems meet: occipital, cervicothoracic, thoracolumbar and lumbosacral. Those transitions structure the entire product ecosystem.
