Unlike the Structural & Dermal Support Core, Release Core and Integration Core ingredients, Castor Oil is incorporated selectively into regional formulations according to their intended neurodermal objectives.

Within the SIRIAM formulation philosophy, Castor Oil fulfils a dual role. It serves not only as a botanical lipid component but also as a functional pharmaceutical excipient, contributing to dermal delivery, skin barrier support and formulation architecture.

Scientific rationale

Castor Oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of Ricinus communis.

Unlike most vegetable oils, Castor Oil possesses a highly unusual fatty acid composition, consisting of approximately 85–90% ricinoleic acid, a hydroxylated monounsaturated fatty acid largely responsible for its distinctive pharmaceutical properties.

Additional constituents include:

oleic acid;

linoleic acid;

stearic acid;

palmitic acid;

tocopherols;

phytosterols;

minor triglycerides.

Importantly, properly manufactured pharmaceutical-grade Castor Oil does not contain ricin, the highly toxic protein present within castor beans. Ricin is removed during industrial processing because it is water-soluble and remains within the residual seed cake rather than the purified oil.

Experimental investigations demonstrate multiple biological mechanisms, including:

enhancement of epidermal hydration;

reduction of transepidermal water loss (TEWL);

modulation of inflammatory signalling;

antioxidant activity;

antimicrobial effects against selected microorganisms;

improvement of lipid barrier organisation;

enhancement of dermal penetration of co-formulated ingredients.

Ricinoleic acid has also demonstrated interactions with EP3 prostaglandin receptors and experimental modulation of inflammatory pathways, although the relevance of these mechanisms following topical application remains incompletely understood.

Human clinical evidence supports Castor Oil primarily as:

a moisturising agent;
